Maputo, Mozambique – The National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) on Friday, February 2 apprehended two Vietnam nationals, both 31 years of age, in a significant wildlife trafficking incident where the individuals were caught in the act with a cache of illicit items, including 19 rhino horns, 18 claws and 4 dandelions at Maputo International Airport.
The arrests occurred around 11:00 in the morning, marking a crucial intervention in the illegal wildlife trade. The suspects were identified within the premises of the airport’s park, where they were allegedly preparing to smuggle the contraband out of the country.
The seizure of 19 rhino horns highlights the persistent threat to endangered species, particularly rhinoceroses, which are targeted for their valuable horns, believed to allegedly have medicinal properties in some traditional Asian cultures. Additionally, the discovery of 18 claws and 4 dandelions suggests a broader illicit trade in wildlife parts, possibly for decorative or medicinal purposes.

This interception underscores the vital role of law enforcement agencies in combating wildlife trafficking, which not only poses a severe threat to biodiversity but also fuels organised crime networks and undermines global conservation efforts.
Authorities have initiated investigations into the origins of the trafficked items as well as the network behind the smuggling operation. The apprehended individuals are expected to face charges related to the illegal possession and trafficking of protected wildlife species, which carry significant penalties under Mozambican law.
This incident highlights the need for strict enforcement measures, international cooperation, and ongoing vigilance in order to protect endangered species and disrupt illegal wildlife trade networks.
