My mouthwatering experience with Sho't Left KZN

My mouthwatering experience with Sho’t Left KZN

Nomazulu Moyo

Embarking on the journey from Johannesburg to the coastal havens of Margate and Durban, I was set to explore the vibrant tapestry of South Africa’s landscapes and partake in the Africa’s Travel Indaba.

My adventure began on a sunny Saturday, as I took off from OR Tambo International Airport aboard a Cemair flight, bound for the warm embrace of KwaZulu Natal’s shores.

Upon landing in Margate, a loving tour guide named Bongi greeted us with open arms, her knowledge of the local gems was as vast as the ocean itself. Nathi, our driver, was a beacon of warmth, guiding us through the scenic routes with a smile.

Our first stop was the majestic Oribi Gorge, managed by Wild5 Adventures. This natural wonder is a marvel of sandstone cliffs and lush forests, where the Mzimkulwana river carves through the earth, creating a canyon that stretches over 25 kilometers and plunges up to 300 metres deep. It’s a place where adrenaline meets serenity, offering activities like the Wild Swing, which I dared to take. Soaring through the air, I confronted my anxiety head-on, the thrill of the swing left me breathless; yet invigorated.

We dined amid nature’s grandeur before retiring to the Margate Sands Hotel, where the rooms boasted stunning river views. The Packshed by Sweetdale served us a feast for the senses, their culinary delights matched only by their exquisite cocktails. As night fell, the gentle lull of the waves ushered us into a peaceful slumber.

South African Tourism’s Sho’t Left Campaign: A Journey of Rediscovery

The dawn of Sunday saw us at Seldom Park Estate, where we embarked on horse riding along the beach, the gentle trot of the horses; a rhythmic dance with the ocean’s edge.

Our journey continued with a boat cruise, captained by Tsepang, offering a panorama of the coastline that took one’s breath away.

As evening approached, we bade farewell to Margate and set our sights on Durban. The Southern Sun- Elangeni Hotel awaited us, its grandeur echoing the vastness of the sea it overlooked.

The Africa’s Travel Indaba commenced the following day, a spectacle of culture and connection that spanned until Wednesday. Dining experiences along Florida Road, from the seafood delights at Duka to the gourmet offerings at Zai Restaurant, were culinary journeys in their own right.

Our hosts from Sho’t Left and SA Tourism, Mabeka, Kutlwano, Bryant, and Fisani, embodied the spirit of local travel, their hospitality a testament to the beauty of South African camaraderie.

As I boarded my SAFAIR flight home on Thursday, I reflected on the myriad of experiences that had enriched my soul. The Indaba event was not just an exhibition; it was a celebration of travel, a confluence of knowledge and passion that transformed me. I returned home, not just as a traveler, but as an ambassador of the stories and wonders that South Africa holds.
