Business unusual as SADC PF urges implementation following MoU signings with strategic partners

By Moses Magadza recently in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

The SADC Parliamentary Forum (SADC PF) has urged its partners to focus on implementation following the successful signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) last week.

The SADC PF formalised MoUs with Oxfam, Southern Africa Youth Forum (SAYoF), Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (ZELA), the Electoral Commissions Forum of SADC countries (ECF-SADC) and the Centre for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD) on the margins its 57th Plenary Assembly Session hosted by the Parliament of Zimbabwe in Victoria Falls City.

In a message addressed to the partners, SADC PF’s Partnerships Coordinator, Mr Sheuneni Kurasha, described the signing ceremony as “a milestone and the beginning of a new chapter in our collaboration through action-oriented engagement.”

With the formal agreements now in place, Mr Kurasha outlined two immediate steps required to operationalise the partnerships. Firstly, he requested each partner to review the work plans attached to their signed MoUs, ensure they are fully costed, and share the updated versions with the Forum by the end of the week.

Secondly, he called on partners to submit a list of activities planned for the remainder of 2025, specifically those that are already resourced and may require joint hosting with SADC PF. These include national-level activities.

“We wish to incorporate the activities for this year into a consolidated Master Work Plan to facilitate effective coordination and maximise the impact of our joint efforts,” Mr Kurasha said.

The MoUs are expected to strengthen cooperation across a range of thematic areas, aligning with SADC PF’s strategic vision for enhanced parliamentary engagement, policy advocacy, and regional development.

The MoUs signed cover a broad spectrum of thematic areas that align with the mandates of SADC PF’s Standing Committees and regional priorities. These include democratisation, governance, and human rights; gender equality, youth development, and women’s advancement; trade, industry, finance, and investment; food security, climate action, and agriculture; and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
