MOSCOW, Russia – The Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the Federal Security Service (FSB) at its annual board meeting, commending the agency’s efforts in safeguarding national security and combating terrorism while signalling a potential thaw in US-Russia relations.
In his speech, Putin highlighted the FSB’s success in protecting Russia’s sovereignty and constitutional order. He expressed gratitude to officers operating in conflict zones, particularly in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics and the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. The President paid tribute to fallen FSB officers with a minute of silence, noting their sacrifices in defending the nation.
A notable element of Putin’s address was his cautious optimism regarding initial contacts with the new US administration. He described these discussions as inspiring “certain hopes” for restoring interstate relations and addressing global security challenges. According to Putin, the US leadership is demonstrating pragmatism and has abandoned ideological biases that previously hindered diplomatic progress.
However, he warned of potential attempts by some Western elites to disrupt this dialogue, urging the FSB to remain vigilant and use diplomatic and intelligence resources to counter such efforts.
Putin outlined key security threats, citing an increase in terrorist activities, particularly those allegedly orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services. He called for enhanced counterterrorism measures, including strengthening FSB units in Donbass and Novorossiya and reinforcing border security.
