Nkayi animal nutritionist calls for support amid drought

Nomazulu Moyo

NKAYI, Zimbabwe – In the heart of Nkayi, a local man has emerged as a beacon of hope for livestock owners. Ntokozo Ncube, renowned for his expertise in animal nutrition, has dedicated his time to cultivating fodder crops, providing a lifeline for livestock during these drought times.
Utilising a variety of trees, grasses, and herbs, Ncube has transformed his home into a sanctuary where community members can bring their distressed livestock for nourishment.

“I blend different trees, herbs, and maize cobs, and I add salt and other ingredients,” Ncube said.
“Creating our own stock feed in rural areas saves us money, as buying feed in towns is too expensive.”

The recent declaration of a state of drought by President Emmerson Mnangagwa underscored the severity of the situation, with livestock perishing due to the relentless dry spell.

Ncube’s innovative feeding methods have been a crucial intervention, yet he faces significant challenges. He said the absence of sails or tents to shield the feed means that any rainfall could spoil his entire stock, threatening the survival of the cattle that he strives to protect.

Ncube says his commitment to animal welfare extends beyond his homestead. Since 2012, after non-governmental organisations introduced new techniques to Nkayi villagers, he has been actively educating others on how to utilise available resources to sustain their livestock. Despite being unemployed, Ncube has found purpose in this noble cause.

His efforts were recently showcased at the Dakamela awards, organised by Chief Dakamela, where he displayed his homemade feed. Ncube says he is determined to expand his impact, expressing willingness to travel across the country to share his knowledge. He can be contacted on +263 716920011 for those interested in learning from his experience or those who would like to buy feed.

However, Ncube says his mission is hindered by environmental hardships. The scarcity of rain has led to a dire need for water, and the lack of adequate shelter for his feed remains a pressing concern. He appealed to the community and benevolent individuals for assistance with sails, tents, or even the provision of a borehole to secure the future of his vital service.

In the face of these adversities, Ncube says his resolve remains unshaken as he continues to fight for the well-being of Nkayi’s livestock and the prosperity of his fellow residents.
