POLOKWANE, South Africa – The Limpopo Tourism Fair held at Savannah Mall in Polokwane last week, showcased the best of Limpopo’s attractions and offered visitors a chance to learn more about the region’s culture and natural beauty.
However, 30-year-old Jack Letsoalo, has already made a significant impact in the realm of local economic development and tourism in Polokwane Municipality.
The holder of an Advanced Diploma in Tourism from Tshwane University of Technology, Jack is passionate about promoting the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of his hometown.
Jack joined the municipality as an intern in February 2024, transitioning from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment. His role focuses on engaging with local tourism stakeholders and promoting the municipality’s attractions, which include the renowned Polokwane Game Reserve and several heritage museums.
“I believe tourism is vital for our province and our country,” Jack says.
“It not only contributes significantly to the GDP but also creates numerous opportunities for youth employment. This industry is broad and includes accommodation, transport, hospitality, and attractions—all crucial for economic growth.”
One of Jack’s key responsibilities is to assist at the Visitor Information Center, where he promotes various tourist attractions. Recently, he participated in a holiday fair organised by the local tourism association, aimed at showcasing Polokwane’s rich history and heritage.
“Our municipality is known as the ‘place of safety’ for a reason,” Jack explains. “It’s a progressive area with a wealth of attractions and a welcoming environment. The weather is pleasant, making it a great destination for visitors.”
Jack emphasises the importance of local attractions like the Bakone Malapa Open Air museum, which serve to educate visitors about the region’s heritage. “These sites are essential for sustaining our culture and ensuring that our history is recognized and celebrated,” he notes.
In addition to historical sites, Jack highlights the Polokwane Game Reserve as a unique offering. “It’s the only municipality in Limpopo with a game reserve where people can enjoy activities like cycling and wildlife viewing. It’s a wonderful place for families and tourists alike,” he shares.
Reflecting on his journey, Jack expresses a deep commitment to uplifting local tourism businesses. “I see the potential for collaboration among tourism stakeholders. By promoting these businesses, we can create more job opportunities and enhance the tourism experience in our municipality,” he says.
