PARKTOWN, South Africa – Operation Shanela, the initiative targeted at illegal mining in Gauteng, has achieved significant success this week with the arrest of over three hundred undocumented foreign nationals suspected to be involved in the illicit activities.
Joint efforts to fight illegal mining
The operation, carried out between 18 December and 22 December 2023, is a joint effort involving the South African Police Service (SAPS), the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), the Department of Home Affairs, the Department of Labour, and other law enforcement agencies.
The crackdown has led to the recovery of high-caliber firearms, including AK-47 rifles, and the seizure of a substantial number of tools commonly used in the illegal operations. Gas cylinders, generators, and explosives were among the items confiscated during the operation.

Illegal mining activities disrupted in multiple districts
Illegal sites in Primrose and Boksburg in Ekurhuleni District, Cleveland in Johannesburg District, and Kagiso in West Rand District were disrupted and dismantled during the operation.
The multidisciplinary and integrated approach employed in Operation Shanela reflected a commitment to tackling the pervasive issue of illegal mining in the region, a statement from the agencies said. The collaborative efforts of various law enforcement agencies demonstrated a unified front against criminal activity.
Fight against illegal mining to continue
Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, the SAPS Provincial Commissioner in Gauteng, said the disruptive operations would continue across the province. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to the illicit activities.
He said they had noted that many of the illegal activities occurred in close proximity to communities, underscoring the importance of community cooperation in combating this illicit trade.
