Polokwane, LIMPOPO – The Limpopo Holiday Fair, now in its eighth year, has emerged as a pivotal event for tourism in the region, attracting stakeholders from across Southern Africa.

Held at the Savannah Mall, the fair features 155 exhibitors, showcasing the rich cultural and natural heritage of Limpopo, alongside partnerships with tourism bodies from neighbouring Zimbabwe and Botswana.

Gerhard Franken, chairperson of the Polokwane Tourism Association, said he was proud of the event’s growth.

“We started with only 50 exhibitors, and today we have 155. This event is no longer just a local showcase; it has gained recognition from the national Department of Tourism and has become the number one tourism event in Limpopo,” Franken said.

The fair includes a new “Adventure Hub,” which highlights various activities available in the province, alongside a fun walk aimed at promoting community participation.

“We want to show that there’s so much more to do in Polokwane than just attend a soccer match or visit a market,” Franken emphasised.

In addition to promoting local tourism, the fair has become a platform for cross-border collaboration. Buyers from Botswana and Zimbabwe attended, reflecting the regional interest in Limpopo’s tourism potential.

“The feedback year on year has been extremely positive. Everyone can’t wait to book for next year,” said Franken, indicating the fair’s role in bolstering economic ties within the region.

The event also recognised the hard work of the hospitality sector through the annual “Star Awards,” by celebrating those who contributed to the tourism experience.

“It’s vital to acknowledge the dedication of everyone involved in tourism, from waitstaff to petrol attendants,” he added.

Looking ahead, the fair aims to introduce more cultural and township tourism experiences.

“Next year, we’re planning to incorporate additional events to highlight our rich cultural heritage,” Franken said.

Apart from showcasing tourism opportunities, the event also aims to educate locals about the diverse attractions within the province.

Franken said the Limpopo Holiday Fair continued to expand while it reinforcing the importance of tourism in fostering regional unity and economic development across Southern Africa.
