DRC parly speaker urges peaceful resolution amid M23 conflict

DRC parly speaker, Vital Kamerhe, has cautioned against calls for war, emphasising President Tshisekedi’s willingness to negotiate.

“This is not a plenary session for a declaration of war,” the Speaker of the National Assembly said in the first parliamentary session since the M23 seized control of Goma, asserting that “efforts must continue towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict”.

This marks a shift in President Tshisekedi’s stance, who had a month ago declared he would not negotiate with the M23, even if they reached the gates of his residence.

CENCO and ECC propose peaceful solution to crisis, plan to consult all parties involved

Religious leaders from the Episcopal Conference of the Congo (CENCO) and the Church of Christ in the Congo (ECC) have presented a peace plan to President Tshisekedi and opposition leader Martin Fayulu. The CENCO Secretary General emphasised the importance of including M23 in any peace talks. “We want an alternative solution to war. The war is being waged by those who have taken up arms. It wouldn’t make sense to put them aside and hope to find peace without them,” he stated.
