HARARE, Zimbabwe – The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) is investigating the mysterious deaths of 19 hippos in the Sapi Safari Area and Chirundu along the Zambezi Valley over the past three months.
In a statement released on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the deaths and indicated that samples have been collected from the deceased animals for laboratory testing.
“Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority is saddened to report the death of 18 hippos in the Sapi Safari Area and one in Chirundu over the last three months,” Farawo said. “The Authority is carrying out investigations with various partners to ascertain the cause of death. Samples have been taken and sent for lab testing, and we are waiting for the results.”
This incident follows the recent deaths of four rhinos and other wildlife species at Lake Chivero due to water contamination.
“The health and safety of wildlife in Zimbabwe remain our top priority, and we are committed to providing thorough updates as new information becomes available,” Farawo added.

The deaths of the hippos have raised concerns among conservationists and wildlife experts, who are closely monitoring the situation.
“This is deeply concerning,” said David Matsika, a local resident and wildlife enthusiast. “Hippos are an integral part of our ecosystem. We need to understand what is causing these deaths and take urgent action to protect these magnificent creatures.”
The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority has assured the public that they are working diligently to determine the cause of the hippo deaths and will take appropriate measures to protect wildlife in the region.
